Training & Racing

Training Schedule

We warm up together, enjoy the session together, and cool down together. No one is ever left behind. Club members are expected to attend a minimum of two of these sessions per month. Some club members use our local parkrun at Irchester Country Park on Saturday mornings as a less formal training session. Additionally, many club members tackle their weekly long runs together, normally on a Sunday morning at 0800. These are both sessions you can

Club training

We participate in four training sessions per week. Our formal training sessions normally last between 75 and 90 minutes and are held on Tuesday and Thursday at 1830, to improve strength, speed and endurance to enable us to compete across the calendar year. We learn key skills for racing including how to manage pace; to change gear during a race; and how to best use our energy to tackle hills. We meet at various local starting points, depending on the session, which are communicated to members well ahead of the session.

opt into. It's in no way compulsory, but it is a good opportunity to run with other members of a similar pace to you, outside of the more formal sessions. It can also help to build friendships within the club, which is all part of it.

Racing

We are a competitive club, competing in a range of events. This includes supporting local races such as Stanwick 10k, Northampton half marathon and Wellingborough 5, regional leagues such as the Northants Road Running League and East Midlands Grand Prix Series - which features a must-do race around the Silverstone circuit - and national races including the London and Manchester marathons, Great North Run and Cardiff half marathons. Some club members have also competed at ultra-marathon events such as Endure24 - where we won the Men's Small Team category in 2024 - and the Manchester-Liverpool 50 mile, as well as a variety of overseas races.

All club members are expected to participate in at least two races each year - most members enjoy racing many more - wearing Higham Harriers colours. This is important not only to ensure your ongoing development but also to support the continued success of the club

Community
At Higham Harriers Athletics Club, we want to be an integral part of the local community. To make that happen, many club members regularly participate in our most local parkrun at Irchester Country Park. We also arrange for the club to set up what we call a 'parkrun takeover'. This happens once or twice per year on an advertised Saturday, where club members fill all the volunteer roles, including providing timed pacers, normally from 18 minutes up to around 30 minutes.

We're always keen to meet potential new members, and the local parkrun is one of the many ways you can find us.
